“Influencing” our diets: how social media personalities are impacting children’s eating habits

There may be a new reason (amongst hundreds of others) to keep your children off social media.

Doctoral student Anna Coates conducted research at the University of Liverpool and discovered that social media influencers can ‘influence’ children’s eating habits.

The experiment involved showing children images from YouTube videos. There were three groups: one group was shown images with YouTubers holding non-food objects, another group was shown YouTubers eating healthy snacks, and the last shown YouTubers eating unhealthy snacks. The children could then pick between healthy and unhealthy snacks for themselves.

When allowed to pick, there was no difference in what foods the “healthy snack” group picked versus the control group, but the “unhealthy snack” group consumed over 30% more calories compared to the other two groups, or 90 calories.

According to Dr. Natalie Muth, “”It only takes an extra 70 calories a day for a child of normal weight to become overweight,” so these numbers add up quickly.

So, while influencers may not be able to sell you weight loss teas and hair vitamins, they can influence your children to make unhealthy eating choices.

Economic, Racial & Gender Inequality

How to Get in to College: Rich People Edition

Photo: Gordon Caplan leaves Federal Court in Manhattan. NY Daily News.

Co-chairman of AM Law 50 law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher, Gordon Caplan, was just released on a $500,000 bond. Along with approximately 50 defendants, Caplan was arrested for participating in a conspiracy that allowed cheating on college entrance exams. The conspiracy was led by William Singer, who founded a college preparatory business called the Edge College & Career Network. Recorded during a wiretap, Singer explained to Caplan that his business helps the wealthiest families in the U.S. get their kids into school by having the proctor of the standardized test answer the questions for the students. Cornell alum, Gordon Caplan wired $75,000 in two separate amounts to Key Worldwide. The elaborate FBI sting recorded detailed conversations during wiretaps describing the scheme run by Singer involving Caplan, other executives and businessmen, actresses and sports coaches.

Picture-Perfect Diversity

Despite small increases in the past three years, representation of black associates is just below pre-recession level at 4.66%, the number of black partners has barely increased since the recession at 1.83% and minority women remain the most dramatically underrepresented group at partnership level. These figures were found by The National Association for Law Placement and published in their 2018 report on diversity. In many cases, firms are recruiting a small number of people from underrepresented groups to appear on firm brochures in order to create an illusion of diversity instead of creating an environment that supports and encourages equal treatment and opportunity.

Letting Sexual Harassment Slide

Photo: Shutterstock.

In addition to lack of representation, female lawyers are also facing sexual harassment from clients. In 2018, the International Bar Association found that nearly one in five instances of sexual harassment were committed by clients, and hardly any firms have policies in place to address this issue. With the automation of some legal work and an increase in alternative legal service providers, the competition for clients is higher than ever. Firms are, therefore, reluctant to put policies in place that may scare clients away. In addition, many female lawyers do not report clients for sexual harassment due to fear of being forced off cases and losing career-advancing opportunities.

Takeaways

Within the legal community, economic, racial and gender inequality remains a prevalent issue. In order to work toward change, there must be an open conversation about the issues currently faced and an effort toward finding solutions that works. In the case of corrupt, wealthy executives and clients who have been reported for sexual harassment, blame must be placed and justice must be found in appropriate punishment. In the case of racial inequality in the workplace, rather than placing blame on law schools for not accepting many black students, firms need to increase the demand for black lawyers.

“Change does not come easy. The struggle toward achieving the goal of diversity and inclusion in the legal community is a process, but one that we all must be invested in.”

Millennials: Generation Rehabilitation

Via the-pool

Historically, therapy has been a taboo subject, which required careful consideration and something to be “wrong” with the person. It seemed like people should only go if they felt like they had some sort of mental illness. Now, therapy seems like a first option for millennials.  They treat it more like an act of self-care than a chore. Society has set such high expectations for millennials, and it causes them immense stress when they can’t meet them. With the creation of therapy apps and online services such as TalkSpace and MyTherapist, millennials find it easier than ever to get the help they need.

The number of students seeking mental-health help increased from 2011 to 2016 at five times the rate of new students starting college, according to a 2017 report from the Center for Collegiate Mental Health at Penn State University. The stigma which was originally connected to psychotherapy has significantly decreased in the new generation of patients who are looking for treatment. Rather than being embarrassed about receiving mental health help, millennials are embracing it and are even able to casually talk about it with their peers. They are not worried about how many more sessions they will need, but instead are just happy to be able to talk to someone.

This is a complex situation, and the effects of this new approach to therapy have yet to be seen. On the negative side, apps may lead patients to think of therapy as a “quick-fix” rather than a long-term solution. If patients do pursue long-term therapy, it may also lead to dependency. Millennials also have different expectations of therapy, and they want someone to tell them what to do rather than someone to talk to. On the other hand, therapy is a coping mechanism that leans toward positive change. The stigma has been reversed and now patients are proud to be taking care of their mental health and seeking help.

Probiotics and us: the helpers in your gut

Via Maangchi

Remember those Activia commercials?

According to research done by Katherine Harmon Courage, probiotics are more important than we think. Not only that, but the prebiotics—what we eat that feeds the microbes in our gut—are also essential to our digestive health. It is important to take care of the little guys in our bellies because they provide benefits such as fighting infections and moderating our weights.

In her book “Cultured: How Ancient Foods Can Feed Our Microbiome”, Courage explores the role our microbes play in our diets and the history of ancient foods rich in probiotics. For instance, Courage discusses that when humans were hunter-gatherers, we used to eat much more fiber than we do today, which is an important prebiotic that feeds our microbes. She says that if we do not feed our microbes, that they will eventually eat at the lining of our lower intestine (which honestly sounds kind of scary).

She also discusses how foods rich in probiotics should be an essential part of human’s diets. In Korea, for instance, kimchi is an essential part of a Korean diet, and even in remote Greenland, probiotics can be found in traditional Inuit foods like kiviak: birds fermented in seal skin.

By incorporating foods rich in probiotics and fiber into our diet, we create an environment where our microbes can thrive. In turn, our guts will be a lot healthier.

Generation Z: Glued to Our Computers & Depressed

Technology in the Workplace

Our generation – ‘Generation Z’ – is the first generation truly raised on technology. As Generation Z is graduating and entering the workforce, the challenges of integrating technology into work are expected to rise. This week, American Lawyer journalist Victoria Hudgins reported that more tech may mean more problems, especially for young lawyers. The ability to work remotely has been adopted by many Millennial lawyers already and the implication is not more free time expected to come with being away from the office. Instead, Millennial lawyers face the issue of the ability and pressure to always be connected. This is presumed to be the cause of increased anxiety and depression in young lawyers.

Goodbye Law Firms?

Another shift in the legal services arena due to technology is a rising number of alternative legal services providers. Just this week, Axiom submitted a draft registration statement to the Securities and Exchange Commission. Axiom specializes in offering technology-enabled legal services and currently employs over 2000 people around the world and had reported revenue of $300 million in 2017. The effect that this shift will have on employment for lawyers is unclear. [Roberts, “Alternative Legal Services Provider Axiom to Go Public”]

Social Media Fraud

Some aspects of technology, however, have provided more cases for lawyers. For example, New York State Attorney General Letitia James recently announced a settlement with Devumi LLC and related companies owned by German Calas Jr. for social media fraud. Social media fraud was defined by the AG’s office as attempting to deceive and affect the decision-making of social media audiences. An example of social media fraud is selling “endorsements from social media influencers without disclosing that the influencers had been paid for their recommendations.” [Lewis, “How New York Authorities are Regulating the Internet”]

The Future of Generation Z

As it always has, technology is developing faster than we can keep up. In today’s world, we are struggling to deal with the issues that technology has created in relation to the work, the environment, privacy, etc. As our generation enters the workforce, we face a great deal of challenges as well as potential.

We have the responsibility of paving the way for future generations on how to integrate technology into our personal and professional lives.

Waiting on the World to Change

Welcome back to the world of Anthony Rocca. I am sorry for my short hiatus due to the fact I needed to take care of some personal dilemmas in my life however each experience I face allows me to become a better listener and writer in society. Now time to talk business. The articles throughout Business Insider have been a wide range of different topics including the anticipation of the stock market due to the United States Summit with North Korea that will be taking place in Vietnam today (https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-news-opening-bell-february-27-2019-2019-2). Also, throughout the past couple of weeks their has been plenty of talk about Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and the revolutionary direction he wants to take his company, including the facts of his very public divorce with his wife making her one of the richest women in the world (https://www.businessinsider.com/amazonbasics-memory-foam-mattress-review-2018-12). What I will be discussing in this particular press release is an outlandish concept that is starting to become reality.

FEDEX is teaming up with Wal-Mart and Pizza Hut where they are creating a robot that is on wheels that has the ability to deliver items within a 3 mile radius of both the stores. The robot has been created by the same company that invented the Segway stand up scooter and they have been testing their new invention in several different cities including Memphis this past summer. In our modern day society, inventors have been pouring millions into this same day delivery concept because majority of both Pizza Hut’s and Wal-Mart’s target markets fall within a 3 mile radius of both of the stores. https://www.businessinsider.com/r-fedex-partners-with-walmart-pizza-hut-to-test-last-mile-delivery-robot-2019-2

What I find so fascinating about the concept of this new door step delivery is how rapidly it is coming into effect especially here in the United States. Within the next 5 to 10 years most of our everyday interactions with grocery stores and or restaurants will be completely eliminated due to robots such as this FEDEX one as well as drones in Amazon and things of that nature. It is pretty unbelievable how the next best thing is coming out before society can even try the current best thing. I have a food for thought before I finish this press release. In the coming years when most of the retail and service industry is being handled by robots and or very advance technology, do you think the lack of human interaction will hinder human’s ability to openly communicate with each other? Looking more in dept in the US as the divide between the country becomes more prevalent, what will be the results from the lack of everyday human interactions?

Back to Basics: Fresh Pasta

There are very few things on this earth that are as wonderful as homemade pasta. If you’ve only had the store-bought stuff, I highly implore you to try the real-deal.

Homemade pasta gets a bad rap as something difficult to make, but with only three ingredients and a bit of elbow grease and and determination, you can whip up an authentic batch of any noodle easily.

Here’s what you need to make a batch of fresh pasta just like your nonna.

  • 3 large eggs
  • 4 cups 00 flour. This is a very finely ground and fine grade flour, but if you have trouble finding it, all-purpose flour works just fine.
  • Salt to taste

Start by combining your flour and salt in a mixing bowl. With a clean work surface, make a mound with your flour. With your hands or the back of a wooden spoon, make a crater in the center of your flour mountain and add your eggs. Whisk your eggs together with a fork and slowly begin to add the flour bit by bit, until you have incorporated all the eggs and have about half of your flour remaining.

Photo Courtesy: Rachel Ray Every Day

Roll up your sleeves and begin kneading your dough. Make sure to keep your work surface well-floured to keep it from sticking. It should look a bit shaggy at first, but as you continue to knead it should come together nicely. Continue kneading for ten minutes, then wrap in plastic and allow to rest 30 minutes.

Once your pasta has rested, it is time to roll it out and to cut it into noodles.

There’s a lot of impressive technology on the market that will do pretty much all of this work for you, from kneading the ingredients to rolling it out into perfect noodles, but to me, this feels like cheating. If you don’t knead your own pasta, then it simply won’t taste as delicious at the end. I don’t make the rules.

I prefer to use the old-school stuff. I can’t make pasta without my Imperia Pasta Machine. These are made in Italy, so you know they’re the real deal. I heard from a friend of mine in Vicenza that her, her mother, and her grandmother all own this pasta machine and swear by it. That’s how you know it’s good. I’m inclined to agree. It works perfectly every time and you get some beautiful and evenly shaped noodles.

Luckily, you don’t have to fly to Vicenza for one. You can order the Imperia Pasta Machine on Williams-Sonoma, along with different attachments to make all sorts of different types of noodles.

The Imperia Pasta Machine is the real star of this recipe, because it’s not so easy to cut perfectly shaped noodles by hand. This delivers a beautiful noodle every time and takes up little counter space. With removable, easy-to-clean parts, a clamping mechanism and rubber feet to keep it on your counter, and different attachments, you can make any pasta with ease. With its intuitive design, you will never go back to store-bought pasta again.

Once your pasta is rolled, cut it into strips narrow enough to feed through the machine, and turn the crank. On the other end of the machine, you should have beautifully cut noodles.

Throw the noodles into boiling water for about thirty seconds and drain. Dress your noodles as desired.

If you’re looking for inspiration, I highly recommend making these noodles into Cacio e Pepe, which literally translates to cheese and pepper. I really can’t think of a better combination. This Bon Appetit recipe is one of my favorites.

You can save these noodles in the fridge for two days, or in the freezer for two weeks, but I doubt you’ll have leftovers.

If you’re ready to start making your own pasta, here’s where you can buy an Imperia Pasta Machine of your own. Go ahead and toss out those boxes of Barilla while you’re at it.

The History of the Gatorade Shower

Sponsored by Gatorade

Urban Meyer receiving a Glacier Freeze Gatorade Shower after a victory

The Gatorade shower is a time-honored tradition that has now transitioned from professional sports to a form of celebration that is accepted in all sports in almost all leagues in the world. Though this is now a celebrated occurrence that goes along with big wins in either championships or rivalry games, it started out as a way to prank your head coach. First here is a little preface on the world’s first and most popular sports drink.

Gatorade: A Brief History

Gatorade is the namesake beverage of the University of Florida Gators. It was developed by a team of scientists led by Robert Cade for the school’s football team. It was used to help replenish body fluids lost during tremendous physical activity. Two years later, the Gators credited it partially for the teams first Orange Bowl win and then the drink became a commercial product. Gatorade is now owned by Pepsico and contributes about 12 million dollars a year to the University of Florida.

The First Dunk

The first occurrence of the Gatorade shower was Jim Burt of the New York Giants who dunked cold, Orange Gatorade on Head Coach Bill Parcells after being angry over a decision made during a 37-13 victory over the Washington Redskins in October of 1984. The first dunk is also claimed by three members of the Chicago Bears, Linemen Dan Hampton and Steve McMichael and Linebacker Mike Singletary who decided to give the infamous Mike Ditka a cool Gatorade bath after beating the Minnesota Vikings, but that was a month after the Giants initial Gatorade Shower.

Championship Prestige

The Gatorade Shower gained its championship prestige two years after its original inception. The same New York Giants that started it continued it after every win during the 1986 season that eventually culminated in a Super Bowl victory against the Denver Broncos. It has since been a mainstay in the Super Bowl.

In Other Sports

  • The Gatorade Shower was first given to a basketball coach in 2008 when Forward Paul Pierce dumped Fruit Punch Gatorade on Head Coach Doc Rivers after the Boston Celtics had won the NBA Finals.
  • In Baseball, it is common practice to cover a player who hits a game-winning hit or even a walk-off hit with Gatorade. This practice usually happens during a post-game interview.

Infamous Shower

The two most infamous occasion where a Gatorade shower happened to soon both involved the Louisiana State Tigers. The first happened when Kentucky Wildcats celebrated by showering their Head Coach Guy Morriss up by 3 points. The next play was a tipped Hail Mary pass by LSU. The more recent occurrence happened last year in the highest scoring game in college football history. LSU showered their Head Coach Ed Orgeron with Gatorade after an interception. The interception was then called back and Texas A&M went on to win the game in seven overtimes. Needless to say, you should look for crazy things to happen when the LSU Tigers are in a football game where Gatorade is spewed.

No matter the sport or the event, Gatorade is the drink of champions and fuels athletes and just normal people to strive for and achieve their best. Be sure when you choose to have something to drink after working out or even after work, know that Gatorade will help you perform to your potential. Hydrating with Gatorade may just lead to a Gatorade Shower in your future!

Stone Fired Pizza—the Must-Try Pizza

IMG_2862 2

My friends and I decided to go out to eat on Sunday night to take a much needed break from studying for our midterms.  It’s always hard to make a decision about what kind of food to get in Gainesville because there are so many choices. After weighing our different options, we decided to get pizza, one of our favorite college comfort foods.

We sat down at dinner and talked about how hectic the week before spring break has been. All of us are headed to different places over break because we all live in different areas. We always say that it’s interesting that we all ended up crossing paths because a few of my friends and I live several hours away from Florida.

Amidst our conversations, we figured out that each of us was going to try a different kind of pizza. Gainesville is not only the home of the Gators, but it is also home to so many different kinds of pizza. Over the years we’ve been in college it has become one of our favorite things to get to eat. We always go to get pizza after football and basketball games.

Recently, pizza that’s made in a wood-fired oven has become one of my favorite things to get. Pizza that is cooked in this way is classified as stone fired pizza. The main thing that makes this kind of pizza taste so good is that the pizza oven has a small fire inside of it, which allows the pizza crust to become cooked perfectly and make the pizza have a more authentic Italian taste to it.

We had to take pictures of the pizza when our food arrived because it looked so good, and we have always have had a habit of posting photos of our food on our social media accounts. Some of our pizzas can be seen below.

After having our food, we unanimously decided that stone fired pizza would become one of our go-to foods in Gainesville. The place that we had our pizza at was called Piesanos, located on W. University Ave. right across from campus. We definitely will be going back many times because the pizza had so much flavor to it and it was brought out to us very quickly. Our meal was a great way to take a break from studying and was able to give us enough pizza to take home and eat later that night.

3 Tips for Organizing Your Home According to Marie Kondo

Keeping our houses tidy is essential for progress, peace of mind, and happiness. Clutter often builds up over time and it can be difficult to deal with when we have been so used to it for so long. Here are some tips from best-selling author and world-renowned tidying expert Marie Kondo on how to organize your home.

1. Organize by category rather than by location

Stop thinking about organization as something that has to be done a room at a time. Instead categorize your mess by: clothing, books, papers, “Komono” (kitchen, bathroom, garage, miscellaneous), and sentimental items. If you clean up by location, there’s a chance that you won’t realize that you have different places for things such as pens, batteries, appliances, candles, and more. By organizing by category, you will make specific locations for these items in your home rather than having some in every room of your house. If this gets overwhelming, you can even simplify it further and do smaller categories at a time. For example, if you are having a hard time organizing your clothes, start with just your trousers. You will find that this method will streamline your tidying keep your items organized for longer.

2. Determine which items “spark joy”

One rule that Marie always shares with her clients is that they must only keep items that “spark joy”. By this she means, physically pick up the item in your hands and determine how it makes you feel. If it makes you happy then it is something that you should keep. If not, you would probably be better off donating it or throwing it away. We all have the issue of keeping items around for so long because we feel like it could serve us a purpose in the future, but end up never using them. Holding on to these items ends up being more of a heavy burden rather than a tool. Everything in your household should be something that sparks joy, and only you can decide that.

3. Get it all done at once

Rather than tidying a little bit a day, it is better to just do it all at once and get it over with for good. You will never finish in this way because other things will always come up and clutter will pile up in other places. You are probably not going to get it all done in one day, but the quicker you get it all done, the easier it will be to keep your house organized. Marie Kondo says “Tidy a little a day and you’ll be tidying forever.”

Watch Tidying Up with Marie Kondo on Netflix to see Marie help people declutter their homes and choose joy using the KonMari method. This show reveals the life-changing practice of tidying up, as Marie completely changes her clients’ lives in surprising and emotional ways.
